I have only one BIG complaint about PF and others share my concern. The music noise level is way too high and seems even worse when the gym is fairly empty.

Local management always cites "corporate policy" as to why they cannot reduce the shrieking volume and do nothing. They say they "lose points" if they are caught reducing the audio volume. I know of two other people who stopped their membership because of the excessive volume level. To make it even worse, in the changing room, the music is on and the TV is also on full blast.

I do not want to wear earphones and listen to personal stuff, so I have resorted to using ear-mufflers but they help minimally and are uncomfortable when working up a sweat.

I appreciate that rhythmic music helps energize some customers and am not asking for silence, or even for my favorite type of music, but the decibel level in the gym is near intolerable and the company would probably be found legally at fault for creating a noise nuisance that is a audio health risk to hearing for young and old.

PL Management, respond constructively to your customers! The value of my loss is the cost of hearing aids which I might need if you do not reduce the audio volume.

Monetary Loss: $6000.

I am a journalist writing an article on the topic of the high noise level at Planet Fitness. If you are interested in speaking to me, please contact me at joshschlossberg@***.com

Planet Fitness in Howell, MI is TOO LOUD.

There is absolutely no reason a fitness center or gym (formerly called Health Clubs) needs ANY type of music on for the general listening by the customers. If this music is playing to entertain the employees, as I believe is the true reason it is on, then shame on the owners/operators of ALL these facilities.

Bally Fitness, LA Fitness, Planet Fitness and several others I have tried seem to be marching in lock-step behind the guru of loud music. It's NOT healthy. I am 74 and suffer from mild tinnitus (ringing in my ears) that occasionally stops, but is easily triggered to on, so I usually can hear it throughout the day, every day. I don't need additional hearing damage from my "health club".

I just joined the new Planet Fitness in Howell, MI in February 2015. I changed to this club mainly because of the LOW COST, because I don't use the facility much, once or maybe twice a week and sometimes less in Spring - Fall when outside exercise is available. While I was aware of the loud music during my initial tour before joining I thought I could manage it, but on my 3rd actual workout, on Thursday March 5th, it was much louder and while bearable in the big room with a high ceiling, in the locker room and stretching area where the ceiling is only about 8 feet, the same volume from the speakers was excessive. I always wear full ear covering SONY (about $50) headphones with a not very effective sound deadening feature.

They were totally ineffective in protecting my ears. I placed foam ear plugs in my ears then tried to listen to my personal audio however the specific CD (old technology) I had did not have enough volume to be heard easily through the plugs. Some other CD's do work better thru the ear plugs when I turn the CD players volume up to the highest level.

The use personal audio equipment such as I-Pods & CD players by many customers demonstrates that many people prefer their own selections to that apparently picked by the first staff person to turn it on at the start of the day.

The expensive installations of overhead TV sets with audio connections on every cardio machine suggests that customers may wish to listen to the audio portion of the TV broadcast they are watching, but I don't know how that can work when the general sound system in the facility is overpowering everything else.

In summary, please turn the sound system way down, or better, turn it OFF. Please allow your staff to respond to complaints from the customers rather that simply referring to "company policy".

Signed: More Quiet PS I tried to read the terms of service for this web system but it's too long and is extra wide so as to be nearly unreadable.

...shrieking volume... ?

They are big places.

The music may sometimes be annoying, but in no way hearing destroying.

TURN DOWN YOUR HEARING AIDE!

My only comment is that if the noise level caused the staff to shout to members at the Front Desk, or the Fitness Instructor to shout his/her classes all day, THAT would be loud. If they are speaking in a relatively normal tone, then the noise level is OK, just a nuisance to many who don't like certain songs, or especially, when they hear the same songs over and over and over again.

If the noise level were high enuf to cause damage, the staff would not be able to work. Do what I do, metronome your favorite songs to a count and use that count for your cardio (especially great for arc workouts). Then your favorite slower, breathing beats for weights.

The beat will help slow your reps forcing you to use muscle instead of momentum. Make the sound level comfortable in your headset and workout with a smile and enthusiasm to positive, or uplifting or favorites.
