Planet Fitness - Failure to cancel membership
I moved from upstate New York to Connecticut for an internship and immediately signed up for a monthly membership at Planet Fitness since it was the closest gym to where I lived. I had no problems while I went there.
In October of 2011, I was preparing to move back to Rochester, NY so I went to the gym and verbally told the manager to cancel my membership, which he agreed to. I have recently (January 2013) found out that they NEVER STOPPED CHARGING ME, and after multiple phone calls refuse to without meeting in person or receiving a signed letter.
This is, again, after cancelling in person and receiving verbal confirmation of that.
In other words, I have already performed the action stipulated by them. They continue to refuse to cancel my membership or refund the 15 months of membership fees they have charged since I cancelled.
Monetary Loss: $150.
Location: Bristol, Connecticut

Canceled my membership due to their checking account policy. I loved the gym and it's location.
i have the same problem what did you do about it,
The papers you signed do insist on a certified letter for cancellation purposes. Yes, I think that is a ridiculous requirement; nevertheless, it is in the agreement which you signed.
But, what really has piqued my curiosity is how you could have let them charge you for 15 (fifteen!) months and not noticed it. My friend, you need to get a proper grip on your finances if you ever hope to move ahead in life.
There are no verbal cancellations it is only by certified mail or by person as they told me as well as everyone they sign up. It is in your membership agreement!
Read everything before you sign up for a membership. You thinking that a verbal agreement would hold is poor judgment on your part.
Small Claims court can put a stop to this nonsense. Most states require a business that is sued in small claims court to have an attorney appear in court.
That will end up costing the company several hundred dollars to fight the claim.
They will end up paying an attorney plus the claim and court filing fee if they lose. Win or lose it costs them a lot of money.
This seems to be their scam. Claim low prices and great benefits, but make it impossible to ever leave them.
